Worthing Theatres have announced that national treasure Brian Blessed will lend his unmistakable voice to the Genie of the Lamp for their traditional family pantomime, Aladdin, playing at the Pavilion Theatre from Friday 30 November 2018 to Tuesday 1 January 2019.
In an illustrious career spanning over 50 years, Brian has firmly cemented his place as one of the UK’s best known and most respected actors working across all sectors of the media.
Brian has created a string of unforgettable characters including, on TV; Augustus Caesar in I Claudius and PC Fancy Smith in Z Cars, Old Deuteronomy in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit stage musical CATS and a legendary big screen performance as Vultan in the cult classic, Flash Gordon.
Classically trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Brian has interpreted many of Shakespeare’s greatest characters for the Royal Shakespeare Company and National Theatre as well as memorable onscreen portrayals in Kenneth Branagh’s Henry V, Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like It and Hamlet.
With one of the most recognisable and popular voices in the UK, a Facebook group of over 25,000 members successfully campaigned for Brian to become one of the voices of TomTom SatNav. He has been guiding UK drivers to their destinations in his inimitable boisterous tones since 2010.
A passionate mountaineer, Brian’s expeditions have taken him as far as Mount Everest and the North Pole. Now Brian will undertake the adventure of voicing the mystical Genie of the Lamp (an innovative and imposing 12-foot puppet).
Pantomime producer Paul Holman said: “We knew we needed a truly iconic presence to bring life to the voice of our larger-than-life Genie. With his instantly recognisable, bellowing timbre, Brian Blessed was the only choice. Iconic to all generations, Brian will bring his signature ‘boom’ and trademark eloquent wit to put his own unique stamp on the much-loved character of the Genie and I can promise that our spectacular Genie will be as impressive and commanding as Brian himself! With a cast already bursting with stars, Brian will add that extra “flash” to make this year’s production of Aladdin truly magical!”
Aladdin stars Lee Latchford-Evans from dance-pop group Steps in the title role and CBeebies presenter Rebecca Keatley as Princess Jasmine. Tickets can be purchased online or at the Box Office on 01903 206 206.
